Tree root systems in urban development areas are often complex and protected. Damaging these roots can lead to:

Baxter Ecology needed a trusted team that could safely expose and manage roots with zero impact to existing vegetation — all while staying efficient and compliant with environmental best practices.
Our Approach
Our operators deployed one of our specialist hydro excavation units to excavate a 100mm-wide trench to a depth of 600mm. This narrow profile was essential to:
- Avoid structural root damage
- Minimise disruption to surrounding soils and plants
- Prepare the trench for smooth HDPE barrier installation
We used non-destructive digging (NDD) to expose the required zone with precision, working alongside ecological consultants to ensure we followed best practice throughout.
Installation & Reinstatement
Once the trench was safely excavated:
- Our team installed the HDPE root barrier to full depth and alignment
- We then backfilled the trench using 20mm crushed rock, allowing for drainage and stabilisation
- All works were completed within a tight time frame, minimising site disruption and downtime
The ability to excavate, install, and reinstate using one coordinated team and one truck setup streamlined the project for both Baxter Ecology and the developer.
